AI and MCP

We will release this feature with XP+ v21.

Level Up XP can connect to AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude. Once connected, you can ask questions about your gamification setup and work with live information from Moodle.

For example, you could ask your assistant to:

  • Summarise how learners earn points in a course
  • Explain the levels and the points needed to reach them
  • Review a leaderboard or a learner's recent progress
  • Investigate how points were awarded
  • Suggest improvements based on the features available in Level Up XP
  • Award points to a learner

The integration is intended for teachers, instructors and other trusted staff. It is not intended for learners.

What do AI and MCP mean?​

AI assistant refers to the application you talk to, such as ChatGPT or Claude.

MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is the connection between your AI assistant and Level Up XP. It gives the assistant a set of approved tools for reading information or performing actions in XP.

The assistant does not receive unrestricted access to Moodle. You sign in with your own Moodle account, and your existing Moodle permissions continue to apply.

How it works​

  1. Your Moodle administrator enables the integration and decides what it can do.
  2. You add your Moodle site's Level Up XP connection to your AI assistant.
  3. You sign in to Moodle and approve the connection.
  4. The assistant uses the available XP tools when they are needed in your conversation.

Some tools only read information. Others can access learner information or make changes, such as awarding points. Your administrator controls which types of tools are available.

Information returned by Level Up XP is sent to your AI assistant. It does not pass through our systems. Use an assistant approved by your organisation and follow its data-handling policies.

What the integration does not do​

Connecting an assistant does not allow it to bypass Moodle permissions. It also does not give the assistant every Level Up XP feature.

At present, the assistant can inspect many parts of an XP setup, but its ability to make changes is limited. For example, it can award points when allowed, but it cannot change levels, rules or general XP settings.

AI responses can be incomplete or mistaken. Review important information in Moodle, and check the details before asking the assistant to perform an action.
