Ways to use XP with AI
We will release this feature with XP+ v21.
You can speak naturally to your AI assistant. You do not need to know the names of the Level Up XP tools or find Moodle record IDs yourself.
Include the exact course, learner or time period that applies to your request. If a request can make a change, ask the assistant to review the details with you first.
The example prompts use placeholders in square brackets. Before you send a prompt, replace each placeholder with your information.
Understand how points are earned
Ask the assistant to combine the XP levels, rules and course structure into a plain-language summary.
In [course name], summarise how learners earn points and how many points they need to reach each level. Identify activities that do not have a related reward. Do not make any changes.
You can follow up with questions such as:
- Are some activities rewarded much more heavily than others?
- Which rules have limits?
- Are there completion rewards for the main course activities?
Review a learner's progress
If you have permission to access personal information, the assistant can find a learner and review the learner's XP progress.
In [course name], find [learner name] and summarise the learner's current points, level and progress towards the next level.
If the name matches more than one learner, ask the assistant to show you the matches. Select the correct learner before you continue.
Investigate recent points
The XP logs show recent point awards.
Review the Level Up XP activity for [learner name] in [course name] during the last seven days. Summarise where the points came from and identify repeated awards.
The assistant reports the information in the XP logs. It cannot determine a learner's intent. An unusual pattern does not always indicate misuse.
Review a leaderboard
The assistant can summarise individual and team standings. You do not need to export the leaderboard.
Summarise the top ten positions in the [course name] leaderboard. Include the gap between each position and the next one.
Request identifiable learner information only when you need it for your task and your organisation permits it.
Get ideas for improving the setup
The assistant can compare the course structure with the Level Up XP features and rules available to you.
Review the XP setup and course structure for [course name]. Suggest three small improvements that use features currently available in Level Up XP. Explain why each suggestion may help. Do not make changes.
The assistant can suggest changes for you to apply in Moodle. It cannot currently edit XP settings, levels or rules.
Award points
Awarding points changes a learner's XP total. First, ask the assistant to identify the learner and show you the proposed award:
In [course name], find [learner name]. Prepare an award of [number of points] for [award reason]. Show me the proposed award, but do not award the points.
After you check the learner, course, amount and reason, give an explicit instruction:
In [course name], award [number of points] to [learner name] for [award reason]. Do not send a notification.
To notify the learner, say so explicitly and provide the message:
In [course name], award [number of points] to [learner name] for [award reason]. Send this notification: [notification message].
If the assistant cannot award points, your administrator may have disabled tools that make changes. See the administrator guide.
Use safer prompts
These phrases help make your intent clear:
- Add "Do not make any changes" when you only want advice or information.
- Add "Show me what you intend to do first" before you ask the assistant to perform an action.
- Include the exact course and learner names when you know them.
- State whether you want the assistant to notify the learner.
- Ask the assistant to tell you when it cannot verify information.
Always review important results in Moodle. An AI assistant can help you work with XP. You remain responsible for deciding whether its conclusions and actions are appropriate.
