Course levels and sitewide progress

XP can track progress separately in each course or across the site. You can also keep separate course levels and add an overall level.

A separate level in each course

Use In courses mode when each course has its own goals and rewards. This is the default mode.

Each course has its own points, levels, rules, and leaderboard. Teachers can configure XP for their course. Progress in one course does not change progress in another.

One level across the site

Use Sitewide mode when learners must progress towards one level across courses.

Points earned in different courses contribute to the same total. Learners have one level and share one leaderboard. There are no separate course levels or course leaderboards.

The same XP settings and rules apply across the site. Users need permission at the system level to manage them.

Course levels with an overall level

This feature requires Level Up XP+ Premium.

You can use In courses mode and add an overall level. Use this option to show progress within courses and across selected courses.

Learners keep their points and level in each course. Points from courses that you select also contribute to an overall total, with an overall level and leaderboard.

Each course keeps its own settings, rules, and leaderboard.

Choose the mode

An administrator selects the mode for the site.

  1. Go to Site administration > Plugins > Blocks > Level Up XP > General settings.
  2. Set How are points tracked? to In courses or Sitewide.
  3. Optional: If you selected In courses and the Overall level setting is available, set it to Yes to enable the overall level.
  4. Select Save changes.

If you enabled the overall level, follow the overall level setup instructions to add the block and select contributing courses.
